CHRONIC HEALTH PROBLEMS IN OLD AGE

As you age, your health starts going downhill, and you have to face numerous health issues that are a result of weak immunity, low bone mass and other such factors. According to a study, almost 80% of seniors in the world are suffering from some form of chronic illness.

Following is a list of five such health issues that are common in the elderly:

  1. Arthritis: This is a common disease that causes the inflammation of joints leading to pain and stiffness that worsens as you age. Arthritis causes swelling and tenderness of your joints which results in pain, reduced range of motion etc.
  2. Hypertension: This is a condition in which the force of the blood against the walls of the artery is too high. Often termed as a “silent killer”, hypertension has no visible symptoms and can cause a stroke and heart attack.
  3. Diabetes: This condition occurs when your blood sugar levels are too high, resulting in complications like kidney or heart diseases.
  4. Chronic Kidney Diseases: This condition results in the gradual loss of kidney function, resulting in the development of wastes in your body.
  5. Coronary Heart Disease: In this condition, the heart has trouble pumping the blood through the body which may result in a heart attack. Coronary Heart Disease causes your arteries to become narrow, thereby limiting the blood flow to the heart.

All the chronic illnesses mentioned above can be prevented or managed by following a healthy daily routine from an early age. You can prevent most illnesses by limiting alcohol intake, quitting smoking, exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet. In short, it is possible to stay healthy in your old age only if you are willing to make healthy adjustments to your lifestyle in your youth.
