SPONDYLOSIS – THE WEAR & TEAR OF THE SPINE

Spondylosis is the condition of the human body that causes the wear and tear of the spine. This condition leads to the shrinking of the spinal discs in the neck and may also result in osteoarthritis. Spondylosis is mainly observed in the geriatric population across the world. A report by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) states that more than 85% of the world population in the age group of 60 and above are likely to suffer from spondylosis. The activities that can cause spondylosis include lifting heavy loads, practising martial arts, gymnastics, etc.

Some of the common symptoms of spondylosis include:

  • Stiffness and pain in the neck and ligaments.
  • Muscle weakness.
  • Tingling, numbness, and weakness in the hands or feet.
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control.
  • A previous neck injury.

There is no specific treatment for spondylosis. However, one needs to consult an orthopedist or physiotherapist who will guide you regarding the exercises for strengthening and stretching the neck and shoulder muscles. The exercises will help in relieving the stiffness and pain in these muscles. In addition, one may require surgery in case there is a high amount of weakness in the arms or legs.

The common home remedies for lowering the risk of spondylosis include regular exercise and daily walking. Thus, following these simple remedies will help in relieving the neck and muscle pain and eventually prevent the occurrence of spondylosis.
