AVOIDING SLIPS AND FALLS 101: PREVENTION AND CARE

Slips and falls are a common occurrence in almost all the households, throughout the year. We have seen and treated multiple cases of injuries like fractures, ligament injuries, sprains, strains, concussions, etc. These cases can often be avoided by certain precautionary steps.

Small accidents happen with people of all age groups, but these are especially dangerous for the health of our elderly. The age factor in this case, doesn’t allow the injury to heal as quickly. So, how can we prevent such injuries?

Here are a few tips we have collated for you:

1. Awareness of the surroundings:
In our trail of thoughts, we usually forget to analyse our surroundings carefully. It is important to watch out when stepping off a vehicle, a sidewalk or stairs.

2. The role of proper footwear:
A proper footwear can avoid a number of accidents that would otherwise occur most definitely. Slippers and flip flops are usually a no-no, especially if they do not provide proper traction. Boots or shoes are the best gears to wear, especially if you are performing some heavy physical activity.

3. Slow down:
Speed doesn’t just cause more accidents, but also more dangerous injuries. Walk slow and in smaller steps. Also, avoid cluttered areas and small hurdles.

4. Concentrate on the task ahead:
It is important to focus on exactly what you are doing at the moment. With thoughts of other priorities constantly in your mind, you may misstep or meet an accident because of the lack of focus.

5. Avoid wet and slippery surfaces:
Take care to avoid wet and slippery floors. Sweeping spills and wet surfaces immediately also helps reduce the possibility of slips and falls. Covering the floors with traction providing mats will help avoid several small accidents, which would otherwise occur. It is important to be extra careful while using bathrooms and other areas that are usually wet and more slippery.

It is nearly impossible to eliminate all the risks, given the number of activities we perform everyday. However, we can always be careful enough to prevent as many accidents as we can. In case of a severe or prolonged injury, please consult a physician.
